A Snowy Start to 2011

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

A winter storm rolled through central Minnesota yesterday and dumped about 7 inches of snow in the area.  An additional 3 more inches fell last night and this morning and it is still snowing lightly as we speak.  By the time it’s all said and done, we should have over a foot of fresh new snow.  While travel by car wasn’t advised, it certainly didn’t stop the snowmobilers who made the trip up north for their New Year’s vacation.  Many snowmobile riders were seen throughout the day between Longville and Remer.  When the groomers get out, the trails should be in great shape.  We will update you when we get the next trail report from Larry at the Anchorage Inn.

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2011!  Happy New Year!

Ice, Snow and Fishing

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Winter is in full swing now after 8 inches of snow fell in our area yesterday.  Lots of the fluffy white stuff needed to be plowed on the resort.   This was actually a good thing as the snowmobile trails needed a solid base for the groomers to work with.  We would imagine the snowmobiling activity will start picking up this weekend.  A new snowmobiling trail report should be coming in the next day or two.

Last week, ice conditions on Thunder Lake were becoming much better as I measured 7-8 inches pretty consistently throughout our bay and into the channel.  There was only about an inch or 2 of snow cover, so moving around was easy on the ATV.  Had a chance to get out again yesterday and drilled a hole in the middle of the lake in about 50 feet of water and had 10 inches of solid ice.  Some smaller area lakes have measured 12 inches already.  It’s a little more difficult however to get around on the ice on an ATV now because of yesterday’s snowfall.  Better have good tires and/or chains for your wheels if you plan venture out on an ATV.

Haven’t heard much regarding actual fishing reports yet.  Didn’t get out and do any serious fishing yet for myself.  Still waiting to hear some word of mouth reports to pass on to the blog here.  We are noticing that the ice houses are starting to make their way onto the lake.  The snow on the lake now however has made it more difficult now to get houses out on the lake.

We’ll keep you updated!

Happy Holidays to all!

The Ice Is On…..Finally

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

Our bay on Thunder Lake finally froze over completely on December 3rd.  In late November, the ice started to form on the edges, but then a warm front came through and we actually ended up losing some ice.  With the cold temps during the last week, we now have a full sheet.  Thunder is always one of the last lakes to freeze over.  Most other area lakes have been froze now for a week or two.

We took some photos again this year over the last week to show you the gradual freezing process.  I hope to venture out on the ice soon to see how much ice we have.  We’ll keep you updated.

In the mean time, time to start planning your snowmobiling, ice fishing and winter weekend getaways.  Give us a call if you would like to come stay with us this winter.

May Days

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Because of the cooler weather recently, surface water temps haven’t fluctuated much.  We are still around the mid-50’s.  However, there has been a pretty good crappie bite going on in most of the area lakes, including Thunder.  Some panfish and bass have moved up the shallower water and underneath the docks to feed and get ready to nest for the spawning season.  All indications are that the walleyes have been done spawning now for a week or two, which is far ahead of a normal spawning schedule.  Hopefully that translates into a better success rate for catching walleyes on fishing opener and for Memorial Day  Weekend.

Speaking of fishing opener and Memorial Day Weekend, it’s still not too late to book a last second reservation for either weekend.  We also have some good openings on other weeks in the month of May and June.  We still are running our special for stay 3 nights, get the 4th night free.  Check out our ‘Deals & Specials” page on our website for details.  We also still have some openings during the peak summer months.  Feel free to check our availability page if you are interested.

Cottage #9’s bathroom remodel is beginning to take shape and should be completed soon.  We also have decided to replace the kitchen and living space carpet area with a new wood floor.  It will definitely have a new and improved feel throughout the cabin when it is finished.  Cottage Deluxe and Condo #1 also had their linoleum replaced in the kitchen areas.

The wet spring has really greened everything up in the area.  The trees and grass are in mid-season form already.  The rain brought us a double rainbow that ended just at the end of our docks the other day. Thought we would post a couple photos of it for you. The second rainbow is fading a bit in the photo and isn’t as prominent as the other. Unfortunately, we did not find the pot of gold.  🙂  Enjoy!

Monday Morning Musings

Monday, April 12th, 2010
  • Had a great weekend of weather, with highs in the 60’s.  It was a perfect time to start putting in the docks, which we did.  We have all the sections of the docks in the water, with the exceptions of the wings.  A special “thank you” goes out to our friend Luke Rasmussen for helping us out with the docks this weekend.
  • Also had a chance to get a boat in the water and go for a ride on the lake.  Water temps on the surface of the main lake basin were around 44 degrees, while Stiner’s Bay surface temp was about 50 degrees.  Didn’t see a whole lot of action anywhere in terms of panfish.  I still think it just might be a little bit early yet.  If you remember last year, the crappie bite took off on Memorial Day weekend (May 24th) when mid-lake water surface temps were in the mid-50’s.  We are still a little ways off on that.  With weather forecasted in the mid 70’s this week, the water temps may improve pretty rapidly.  We will keep you updated on the water temps and any fishing reports we come by.
  • All the waterfowl have made their way back to Thunder Lake.  The otters have been active around the lake and we also heard our first loon call last night at sunset.  Still waiting for a resident to take us up on our wood duck house.
  • The telephone has been ringing quite a bit lately for reservations on fishing opener weekend and Memorial Day Weekend.  We still have availability for those dates.  Call now to make your reservation.  You can also check out our current deals and specials.

Seasonal RV Sites & Monthly Cabin Rates

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Due to past requests from our guests and other interest from passersby over the last couple years, Thunder Lake Lodge is going to open their RV sites to seasonal rentals for the 2010 resorting season.  There will still only be 3 select spots available for next season.  If anyone is interested in information on the sites, please give us a call.  We are hoping that because of the limited availability, the spots will fill up fast.

Also starting in 2010, TLL will be offering monthly rates for cottages and condos during off-peak seasons.  Specific monthly rates will vary based upon the unit and time of the year.  Please call for details

Timberwolf Sighting

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Back in early August, our guests in Cottage #7 had an extraordinarily rare encounter on their drive back from town on County Road #7, only a couple miles away from Thunder Lake Lodge.  One person in the car pointed out the gray wolf on the side of the road.  So they got as close as they thought they could get to take a picture.  After taking the first photo, they decided to try get a little closer and get an even better photo.  Amazingly, the wolf did not run as they approached closer.  Apparently, the wolf didn’t really pay much attention to them.  I still have yet to see a wolf myself, although I know there are plenty in the area as our deer hunters in November see them quite frequently.

Thanks for the photos, Dolan family!
