The 2nd Annual 2012 Thunder Lake Lodge “Ice-Out Challenge”© will be conducted once again this year via Facebook!  We invite all to participate in this event by ‘liking’ us on our page and commenting for your best guess at when you believe ice-out will occur on Thunder Lake.  Here’s how it will work:

  1. In order to be eligible for the Ice-Out Challenge, you must ‘like’ us or be a ‘fan’ of our page located here:  http://www.facebook.com/ThunderLakeLodgeMN
  2. Entries will ONLY be taken on our Facebook page starting on March 15th at 12 pm CST.  Entries in the blog comments will not count.
  3. You get one guess and one guess only.
  4. You cannot change your answer and your first guess will be the one that takes precedent.

If you have anything that should be added or if you have any questions, just let us know in the comments on Facebook.

We hope to make this an annual tradition at TLL.  We look forward to hearing everyone’s guesses on March 15th!  See you on Facebook!

Thunder Rolls

Friday, April 9th, 2010

As of April 2nd, Thunder Lake has no more ice on it and the open-water waves are rolling.  What an early, welcome sight!  There will now be an extended spring panfishing season before the fishing opener.  I would say within the next couple weeks or so that the water temps will get to the point where the crappies and bluegills will start moving into warmer, shallower water to feed before they begin to start nesting and preparing to spawn.  I can’t wait to get out in the boat to try it out soon for myself.  We will keep you updated.

Ice-Out Conditions

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

The ice conditions on the lake have deteriorated rapidly with the nice weather over the last couple of weeks.  When we left on March 31st, the smaller lakes had already lost all of their ice.  Thunder, as always, was a little behind but was starting to show signs of losing its big sheet of ice in our bay.  Since we aren’t home right now, we aren’t quite sure if the ice is still on the lake today, but our guess is that it has already went out completely.  We will be back home on Tuesday to give you an update on the ice.  Here are some photos of the ice leading up to March 20th:

We have heard some people say that this is the earliest the ice-out has occurred in quite some time.  There will be a nice extended early-spring season on panfishing out of the boat for those who have a passion for it.  I know I will be trying get out a little.  It will also be nice to get everything into the water a little earlier this season.

We will be back soon with updates and hopefully more photos of open water on Thunder Lake!

March Madness! (Random Notes)

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
  • The weather has been downright crazy this month.  We have consistently had 35-50 degree temps for highs during the last 3 weeks.  The snow has been rapidly melted, especially on the hillsides of the resort.  We have very little snow left standing.  The only snow spots left are where I have piled snow from plowing this winter.  The ice on the lake is slowly withering away.  There is probably only 18″ of ice left right now.  It’s crazy, but we LOVE an early spring and we will take it every year.
  • As stated in the past, we have been building a workshop building at the top of the hill so that we have a warm workspace in the winter to work on future cabin projects and wood furniture.  The building is up and the roof is on.  We still have to put the steel siding on and finish the interior.  Those of you visiting us this year will see it as you drive down the cobblestone driveway.  I will be chipping away at it all spring, summer and fall and hope to finish it before winter.
  • We are currently running a spring special up until June 20th.  On any NEW reservations, if you book 3 nights, you will get a 4th night free.  This special is not applicable to Memorial Day Weekend.  Be on the lookout for our new “Specials & Deals” page on our website where we will be posting our current deals for the future.
  • We still have some good availability for the summer weekly reservations.  Our availability page is updated once a day.  Also remember to scroll down on the far right side to see all of the units on the calendar.
  • Keep visiting our blog for updated ice-out conditions on the lake in the next month or so.  We will do our best to take photos and let everyone know the status of it.  Based on this weather, there might a be an extended open-water panfish season leading up to the May fishing opener.  Crappies, anyone?  Last year, the ice went out on April 24th, as shown in these pictures of our bay.

That’s all for now.  Enjoy the great early spring weather, everyone!

And by the way, HAPPY ST. PATTY’S DAY!

Timberwolf Sighting

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Back in early August, our guests in Cottage #7 had an extraordinarily rare encounter on their drive back from town on County Road #7, only a couple miles away from Thunder Lake Lodge.  One person in the car pointed out the gray wolf on the side of the road.  So they got as close as they thought they could get to take a picture.  After taking the first photo, they decided to try get a little closer and get an even better photo.  Amazingly, the wolf did not run as they approached closer.  Apparently, the wolf didn’t really pay much attention to them.  I still have yet to see a wolf myself, although I know there are plenty in the area as our deer hunters in November see them quite frequently.

Thanks for the photos, Dolan family!

Kids Fishing Contest Results (8-20-09)

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Mother nature brought rain with her for last week’s kids fishing contest, but that didn’t stop 6 brave and persistent kids from trying their luck off the TLL docks.  Here are the results:

Isaac from Cottage #11 caught a sunfish measuring 3 3/8″.  It was the smallest of the day.

Noah from Cottage #11 caught the most fish.  He totaled 10 fish.

Caleb from Cottage #11 caught the biggest fish.  It was a 7 1/2″ perch.

It should also be noted that Santino, Michael and Jerah were all first-time anglers who did a great job catching a lot of fish between the 3 of them.

Thanks again to all the participants.
