The 2nd Annual 2012 Thunder Lake Lodge “Ice-Out Challenge”© will be conducted once again this year via Facebook!  We invite all to participate in this event by ‘liking’ us on our page and commenting for your best guess at when you believe ice-out will occur on Thunder Lake.  Here’s how it will work:

  1. In order to be eligible for the Ice-Out Challenge, you must ‘like’ us or be a ‘fan’ of our page located here:  http://www.facebook.com/ThunderLakeLodgeMN
  2. Entries will ONLY be taken on our Facebook page starting on March 15th at 12 pm CST.  Entries in the blog comments will not count.
  3. You get one guess and one guess only.
  4. You cannot change your answer and your first guess will be the one that takes precedent.
  5. The ice will be deemed “out” when we can no longer see any floating ice from shore  in our bay here at TLL.
  6. The person who guesses the correct date FIRST will receive a free Thunder Lake Lodge sweatshirt.  If more than one person guesses the date correctly, the winner will be the person who guessed that date first.
  7. The contest will begin on March 15th at 12:00 pm CST.  At that time, submissions for the contest will begin to be tallied.

If you have anything that should be added or if you have any questions, just let us know in the comments on Facebook.

We hope to make this an annual tradition at TLL.  We look forward to hearing everyone’s guesses on March 15th!  See you on Facebook!

Ice-Out Conditions

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

The ice conditions on the lake have deteriorated rapidly with the nice weather over the last couple of weeks.  When we left on March 31st, the smaller lakes had already lost all of their ice.  Thunder, as always, was a little behind but was starting to show signs of losing its big sheet of ice in our bay.  Since we aren’t home right now, we aren’t quite sure if the ice is still on the lake today, but our guess is that it has already went out completely.  We will be back home on Tuesday to give you an update on the ice.  Here are some photos of the ice leading up to March 20th:

We have heard some people say that this is the earliest the ice-out has occurred in quite some time.  There will be a nice extended early-spring season on panfishing out of the boat for those who have a passion for it.  I know I will be trying get out a little.  It will also be nice to get everything into the water a little earlier this season.

We will be back soon with updates and hopefully more photos of open water on Thunder Lake!

Ice-Out Conditions (4-24-09)

Friday, April 24th, 2009

What a difference a day makes.  Yesterday’s winds and heat moved the ice all over the bay yesterday and as a result, the only ice left in our bay is a small portion in the south end.  A stark contrast from 24 hours ago. These photos were taken on Friday, April 24th at 11:30 am CST.

The ice should all be gone by this weekend with the rain that is forecasted.

The photo on the far right shows the remainder of the ice in the south end of our bay.  You need to click on it, and then click on it again to get the zoomed in photo.

Ice-out Conditions (4/23/09)

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Here are photos and a short video clip of ice-out conditions in front of Thunder Lake Lodge on Thunder Lake as of 11:30 am CST on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009:

Weather in the 70’s today along with the wind we have should do some significant damage to the ice today and through this weekend.

Spring Time Ice-Out Conditions (4/19/09)

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Recent temperatures have the ice blackening and moving away from the shoreline and open water is starting to show itself.  Some loons have returned home to the lake for the summer as have many other waterfowl species.  The last of the snow has melted and gone away and with temperatures forecasted in the 70’s later this coming week, the ice’s days are numbered.  Some wind and rain will also help accelerate the melting process.

Many people have inquired about ice conditions on the lake so we thought we would post some photos of current conditions in our bay in front of the lodge.  We will keep you updated with more photos on the ice-out in the coming weeks as we did with the freezing of the lake in the early winter.
