NOTE: The Snowmobile Trail Report is provided by our friends Jeff Knuf & Larry Gavin, owners and operators of the Anchorage Inn.
Reported by: Larry Gavin – Longville Snowmobile Club
Date of Report: February 18, 2010
Trail Conditions: Very Good
Snow Cover: 12-15 inches
SNOW CONDITIONS:
No new snow this week. Most of the trails still have a good base but the sun is starting to reduce our snow cover. It’s time for another call to the big guy for more snow so we can get a couple more weeks of riding in!!
TRAIL REPORT:
Trails were groomed on Monday and Tuesday. They’ll be done again today and Friday. Groomers reported logging on a 1 1/2 mile stretch of the Wooldlake trail between the turn south to Outing and the trun north to lake Inguadona. Other than that, riders I talked to this week are reporting Good to Very Good conditions. It’s supposed to cool off this weekend, so we should be in for another good weekend of riding.

Reported by: Larry Gavin – Longville Snowmobile Club
Date of Report: February 9, 2010
Trail Conditions: Very Good
Snow Cover: 12-15 inches
SNOW CONDITIONS:
We didn’t get the amount of snow originally forecasted, (imagine that!!), but we did get around 2-4 inches of new snow.
TRAIL REPORT:
All trails will be groomed before the weekend. Based on last weeks riding and the new snow, trails should be in Very Good to Excellent condition again this weekend. I’ll give another update later in the week as I get feedback from riders.

NOTE: The Snowmobile Trail Report is provided by our friends Jeff & Larry, owners and operators of the Anchorage Inn.
Reported by: Larry Gavin – Longville Snowmobile Club
Date of Report: February 5, 2010
Trail Conditions: Very Good
Snow Cover: 10-12 inches
SNOW CONDITIONS:
Not much new snow this week. It’s snowing today and it’s supposed to snow off and on through Tuesday. Nice hard-pack base of about 3-4 inches.
TRAIL REPORT:
Trails have all been groomed this week. Everyone I talked to last weekend said the trails were in very good condition. I talked to a lot of riders that came up from Outing that said the trail was really nice. There’s a rough stretch just short of Lake Inguadona, but overall reports were very favorable. I went out riding twice this week on the Tri-Ville and Lost Girl trails and they were great. There’s a really nice hard-pack of snow on them that makes it feel like you’re riding on a highway, with no ice on the corners. The hard base should hold up well even with a lot of traffic. If you’ve been waiting for good trails to ride, this is the time to come up. The trails don’t get much better than they are right now.
EDIT: Update – As of Monday, February 8th, we have received another 4 inches or so of snow. Trails should be in great shape by mid-week.

NOTE: The Snowmobile Trail Report is provided by our friends Jeff & Larry, owners and operators of the Anchorage Inn. The last report was January 27th, 2010.
SNOW CONDITIONS:
Finally more snow. Reports from people I’ve talked to say we received about 3-5 inches Sunday night. More east, less south and west.
TRAIL REPORT:
With the new snow, the club has resumed grooming this week. All trails will be done before the weekend. All of the riders that I’ve talked to say the Tri-ville from Longville to Federal Dam and the Lost Girl from Longville to Remer are in very good condition. The C Trail and Chippewa South trails didn’t get as much snow so they’re still a bit rough.

NOTE: The Snowmobile Trail Report is provided by our friends Jeff & Larry, owners and operators of the Anchorage Inn. The last report was January 15th, 2010.
SNOW CONDITIONS:
Unfortunately, no new snow to report since our Christmas storm.
TRAIL REPORT:
Most of the trails have a hard packed base, but it’s getting pretty thin with some dirt around corners and at road crossings. They’re forcasting warm weather over the weekend, so this may be the best the trails will be until we get more snow. I’ve talked to several groups of snowmobilers this week and all reports are about the same. Trails are fair, but more snow is needed. Have a great time riding and don’t forget to wish for more snow before you go to bed tonight!!

NOTE: The Snowmobile Trail Report is provided by our friends Jeff & Larry, owners and operators of the Anchorage Inn. The last report was December 30th, 2009.
Snow Conditions:
Winter finally arrived this week and just in time to rip around on the new snowmobile you received for Christmas. We received around a foot of new snow over the Christmas Weekend. This was the first significant snowfall of the year. It was a wet heavy snow that will provide a good starting base on the trails.
Trail Report:
All of the trails were groomed this week. Riders are saying the trails are not bad considering this was the first significant snow of the season. They are reporting some bumpy areas, but over all they are in fair to good riding condition.
Be aware there is a 2 mile section of the Tri-ville Trail south of Hwy 200 that is in poor condition due to logging in the area.
Hope everyone has a great time riding over the New Years weekend. If you have any pull with mother nature, we could use more snow!!

Had a chance to get out ice fishing for the first time over the weekend. Thunder Lake had around 6-7 inches of ice in most spots, while a couple other smaller lakes had the same. Caught some crappies and northerns on Saturday with a friend. With this cold spell, it won’t be long before the ice is 12″ thick with people towing out their permanent ice houses for the winter. In fact, on some smaller lakes in the area, there are already some smaller permanent houses being put out. The ice-making process is in full speed.
Today, the ice on Thunder was 8 inches thick in 30 feet of water and the first permanent ice house was seen across the bay from us.
Hope to get out fishing again this week/weekend. We’ll keep you updated.

This calendar year was really crazy in terms of the weather. June was hot and muggy at times, July and August were uncharacteristically cool, September was gorgeous, October was cold and rainy, November was nice and balmy, and now December has brought the winter in a hurry. As I am posting this, the temp outside is 6 degrees below zero. Thunder Lake basically went from this….

to this…..

…..overnight. Those photos were taken on back to back days earlier this week. It’s been pretty dang cold. With ice fishing now entering my mind, I decided to go out on the ice to see what the ice conditions were like. In the shallow water in front of the lodge, the ice was 1″ – 1.5″ thick. Thick enough to hold me, but not thick enough for me to want to venture out into deeper water to see the ice thickness out there. However with this cold weather, the ice making process should be sped up dramatically. I have heard reports of 4 inches of ice already on shallower lakes that tend to freeze a lot earlier and faster than Thunder does.
We will keep everyone updated on ice conditions throughout the winter, as well as any fishing reports we come across. Also, you can expect to see the first snowmobile trail report sometime this month.
Remember, we have the condo units available all winter for snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiiing or for just relaxing and cozying up for the weekend next to the fireplace. We are also running a two person special throughout the winter.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,
“See You At The Lake”

Back in early August, our guests in Cottage #7 had an extraordinarily rare encounter on their drive back from town on County Road #7, only a couple miles away from Thunder Lake Lodge. One person in the car pointed out the gray wolf on the side of the road. So they got as close as they thought they could get to take a picture. After taking the first photo, they decided to try get a little closer and get an even better photo. Amazingly, the wolf did not run as they approached closer. Apparently, the wolf didn’t really pay much attention to them. I still have yet to see a wolf myself, although I know there are plenty in the area as our deer hunters in November see them quite frequently.
Thanks for the photos, Dolan family!
