Surface water temps are around 75 degrees and the walleye fishing report has been strange lately to say the least. Fish have been hitting on crankbaits in 30 feet of water over 60-80 feet while chasing schools of suspended ciscos and tullibees. Most of the action for this method has occurred during the evening hours. Walleyes were also picked up by our guests recently in 7-10 feet of water adjacent to steep dropoffs on spinner rigs with minnows. These fish were picked up during all hours of the day. This is probably the most walleye action we have seen in the first week of August in our time here.
Crappie fishing is still holding strong and has been consistently the best bite all year. Numbers of crappies have been caught by our guests throughout the year on all sorts of different presentations. Right now, bobber and minnow setups in 15-20 feet of water have been producing the best.
A few northern pike have also been taken recently. Nothing huge, but numbers have been up compared to prior years.
Smallmouth and largemouth fishing continues to be great as well. Pretty much anything you throw at them has been working lately. The bass have definitely moved to deeper water and structure lately however during the warmer last few weeks. Deep-running crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jig ‘n’ pig combos have been producing fish.

Water surface temps are currently 70-71 degrees after a hot and humid week of weather. After a decent two week stretch of walleye fishing, the bite has tapered off quite a bit in the last week or two. A few walleyes are still being picked up with a jig and minnow and spinner rigs tipped with leeches in 20-24 feet of water. The first 3 weeks of June were the best weeks of smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing we have seen here in 3 years. Numbers and size were amazing. It has slowed down a bit since as the bass are now moving into deeper water for the summer. Crappies have been still being caught with small jigs and bobber & minnow setups in the bays in 10-16 feet of water.
Have a great, safe 4th of July!

Fishing action has picked up dramatically since our last fishing report, which is to be expected this time of year. The resort is almost full this week and our guests are getting a lot of bass and panfish action. A few walleyes are still being picked up as well.
The crappie bite has continued to improve, but location and presentation have changed a bit. The crappies have moved out of the shallow water bays and into deeper water adjacent to some sunken structure and deeper weed cover. They have been being picked up in 15-20 feet of water with jigs and beetle spins. Some slip bobber and minnow setups have still been producing fish too. Perch, sunfish and rock bass are being picked up consistently as always.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing has been been fantastic lately as they have gotten off their spawning beds and are getting into their normal aggressive summer feeding mode, which bodes well for our bass fisherman. Wacky worms rigs, tube jigs and crank baits have been effective presentations on the edge of weedlines in 6-12 feet of water. The topwater bite is also starting to come around now. Stay tuned for the next updated report on the topwater bite.
Walleye fishing has been sporadic as a few different cabins have been picking up a couple here and there. However, Gregg Lundquist from Cottage #3 got on a great bite early this morning in 20 feet of water using a spinner rig with leech to pick up 5 walleyes, with the biggest being 21 inches. I also had a chance to get out a few nights ago and got into a great bite with a jig and minnow in 18-22 feet of water. I boated approximately 25 walleye that night with every single one of them being between 13 and 15 inches long. As always on Thunder, one day can be great for walleyes, and the next can be less than spectacular. Night trolling with crankbaits is also a good method, but rarely do we have guests who choose to try that.
Last week , father & son combo Glen and Jake Matney made the trek all the way from Kansas City, MO to join us for a week in Cottage #8 and had a great week of fishing for crappies and bass. Jake caught his first ever walleye and Glen also boated a couple others. On top of that, Glen caught a huge Dogfish (bowfin) that they got pictures of. It weighed in on a run-of-the-mill Zebco spring loaded scale at 12 lbs in the boat, which we take into account aren’t always the most accurate for weighing fish. After doing a little research, we found out that the state record dogfish in Minnesota is 11 lbs, 4 oz. Glen was kicking himself afterwards, but who would have thought of or known that? By far, the biggest dogfish we have ever seen. Something unique, if nothing else.
1st time TLL’ers James Stockman and his father-in-law Richard from Cottage #11 had a pretty good week of crappie fishing. They picked up a few walleyes as well.
The Beebe crew (yes, all 30+ of them) have been hammering the bass and crappies as always again this year. They also have picked up a few bonus walleyes.
And finally, Chris Lund from Cottage Deluxe went out today and caught a nice crappie and a great eating-size walleye for dinner. What’s the big deal, you say? It just happened to be Chris’ 26th birthday. Happy birthday Chris!!!

While fishing reports from the walleye opener were spotty, the fishing action has been steadily picking up over the last couple of weeks.
Crappies and bluegills have been being picked up in the bays in shallow water with bobber and minnow setups, small jigs and beetle spins in 6-10 feet of water. Some walleyes are being caught during the evening bite in 20-26 feet of water with a jig and minnow and crankbaits have been producing fish during the the afternoon hours and in the evening after dark in shallower water as well. Our fisherman on Big Rice have still been consistently catching good pike numbers with daredevils and spoons. With the bass season opening last weekend, smallmouth and largemouth fishing will be fast and furious in the next couple of weeks.
We will continue to keep you updated throughout the summer on fishing reports and the kids fishing contest photos.

I don’t know about you, but my gauge for when the “dog days” of summer officially arrive is not when the weather becomes really hot, humid and sticky. For me, it’s when the fishing action takes a dive (although I realize they are usually both related). While the fishing off the docks for the kids has continued to produce lots of fish, general fishing action over the last few weeks has slowed considerably, especially for walleyes. This has pretty much been the case for all area lakes. Nothing much to report on that end. A few little ones have been caught sporadically, but nothing consistent like in the spring and fall. If anybody really wants to work and catch some walleyes right now on Thunder, I think trolling or casting with crankbaits at night is probably the way to go.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass are still being caught along with panfish. Suspended crappies are being caught on small jigs in 18-30 feet of water. The bass are biting on soft plastics with slower presentations. However, certain nights have also produced a topwater bite on poppers and buzz baits. Bass and all panfish will still hit a live bait bobber rig on any day.
Surprisingly though, northern pike action picked up a little in the last couple weeks as we had a few guests bring in some nice-sized pike. As many of you know, Thunder Lake is not known for producing a whole lot of northerns, but the ones that are caught are usually big fish. A 36 inch pike was caught and released by our guests in Cottage #10 two weeks ago. That was the biggest fish reported this year at the resort.
Stay tuned for the fall fishing reports in September and October when water temps will drop and walleye fishing will be picking back up. I will be sure to keep everyone posted on how our guests do during that time. I might even get out a little too.

Last week’s cold front combined with last week’s and this week’s substantial rainfalls, have dropped surface water temperatures 7 – 8 degrees. Temps were in the 71-72 degree range only a week and a half ago. Immediately after the cold and rain last week, temps were around 65-66 degrees. Last night’s reading was 68 degrees. This obviously has affected the fishing as well, although some very nice fish are still being taken throughout the lake.
Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing have still been good all over the lake. The majority of this week’s photos are smallmouths……GIANT smallmouths. One of our guests from last week caught 3 dandy smallmouths in the 18″-19.5″ range. You will notice Logan from Condo #4 in consecutive photos. Each of those fish are different smallmouths taken on 3 different evenings. Quite the week of smallmouth fishing for any angler. Soft plastics have still been the key for bass in 10-15 feet of water.
Panfishing has been average since the last report. Crappies have been a little more difficult, although we have seen a 12 3/4″ and a 12 1/2″ crappie in the last couple days. Lots of numbers have been difficult to come by. Sunnies and bluegills, as well as perch and rock bass are still being caught by everyone on bobber setups tipped with crawlers and leeches.
Walleye fishing on Thunder has been VERY difficult with this weather recently. Although this has been the case for all lakes in the area (yes, even Leech Lake has slowed down). Only a few have even been caught since our last report, with a couple of them being nice “eater” sizes.
If the weather gets to be more stable and we get some weather more typical of July, I expect to have fishing maybe pick up in the next couple weeks for crappies and walleyes. I think the weather has really screwed them up and put them off their normal feeding patterns and locations. However, getting normal July weather might be asking a lot.

Water temps are 70-71 degrees now on the surface, and fishing for walleyes has hit a screeching halt. A few are still being brought in on lindy rigs and spinner rigs in 20-30 feet of water. However, they are few and far between.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass are still hitting on crankbaits, soft plastics and spinnerbaits in 6-12 feet of water. Bass are also still being caught on live bait rigs in deeper water as well.
Panfishing is still pretty good. Bobber setups have been producing crappies, bluegill, perch and rock bass in the shallow water of the bays. The docks have also still been consistent for the panfish bite.
Three northern pike were caught this week by guests, which is more than have been caught all year at Thunder Lake Lodge.

After 2.5 inches of rain last evening, mid-lake surface water temps are now at 63 degrees. Before the rain, temps were around 65-66 degrees. The heavy thunderstorms really cooled down the water overnight. As a result, the post-front fishing bite was very slow this morning. It might be a day or two for the fishing to get back to normal after all the thunder and lightning last night.
Before yesterday however, fishing was still really good. Largemouth and smallmouth are still being caught in large numbers and sizes. They are hitting on more slow, finesse presentations now. Plastic worms have been the best producer lately. The bass are close to being done spawning now on Thunder and are beginning to get in their summer routine by going out to deeper water as temps warm up.
Walleye action has slowed a bit in the last week. Fish are being marked down in 25-35 feet of water but it has been a very finicky bite. Lindy rigs and jigs with shiners still are producing a few fish in deeper dropoffs that are adjacent to shallow structure. Diane from Condo #6 pulled in the biggest walleye so far this year at Thunder Lake Lodge. It measured at 27.5 inches and was released back into the water by Diane for some other lucky angler to catch in the future.
Crappies, sunfish, bluegills, and perch are still being caught all over the lake in shallow water on bobber setups as well as small jigs. This morning, crappies were seen underneath our docks for the 1st time this year. They should be here to stay for the summer now.

Water surface temps have been around 57-59 degrees lately because of the cooler winds recently and the rain. A cold front moved in a couple days ago that had brought us consistent winds out of the east. Weather this week is supposed to gradually improve and heat up through the weekend. This should have a positive impact on fishing as well.
Despite the cooler weather, walleye fishing activity has picked up a bit. Our guests have been catching a few “eaters” here and there recently. Patrick and Rick from Cottage Deluxe have had some luck the last couple of days with some 16 to 18 inch walleyes. Donald Lotysz in Cottage #8 caught a walleye while fishing for bass in shallower water. I even got a chance to get out myself for a couple hours and ended up catching a bunch of small walleyes along with an 18 incher. The Bergstrom Crew from the Cottage #5 Annex had some good luck with northerns on Big Rice and also had success on Thunder Lake for bass.
Walleyes are being marked and caught in 20-30 feet of water on live bait rigs. Crawlers, leeches and minnows are all being used successfully on lindy rigs. Jig and minnow combinations have produced alot of smaller walleyes as well.
Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing still remains to be the most consistent bite. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jig-n-pig combos and bobber setups tipped with leeches have been producing numbers of fish.
Panfishing off our docks with bobber setups was great for the Kids Fishing Contest this weekend as well. Perch, rock bass, largemouth, smallmouth, sunfish and bluegill were all caught off the dock by the kids on Sunday. The crappies still haven’t moved into the dock areas yet for the summer, but we anticipate that the transition will take place within the next couple weeks.
Last week, our guests were still catching some nice-sized pike out on Big Rice Lake with cane poles and daredevils.
We will keep you posted as the fishing progresses through next week.

Gerry & Bea Graczyk have been coming to Thunder Lake for over 20 years to fish for walleyes. So it’s safe to say that the couple from Silver Lake, MN have done their homework and alot of research over the years on how to catch Thunder Lake walleyes. Their time and persistence has paid off. Over the years, they and their sons have caught some giant walleyes. In classic fashion, a great fishing story usually follows each big walleye they have caught on Thunder throughout the years.
Last week, the Graczyk’s joined us again in their favorite cabin, Cottage #7. According to them, last week’s fishing was one of the better weeks of fishing they have seen in a while. They caught numbers and good sizes of walleyes. Ask Gerry and/or Bea and both of them will tell you that Bea outfished Gerry yet AGAIN this year. Don’t be misled by the photos below. Gerry claims to be able to hold them more properly and get them back in the water faster, but I just think he likes to try and take credit for Bea’s walleyes on camera (just kidding Gerry).
The Graczyk’s shared their photos with us from last week and we thought we would post them. There are details of each fish in the photos.
Thanks for sharing with us, Gerry & Bea.
