Thunder Lake Lodge Fishing Report (10-23-10)

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

The last three weeks has seen surface temps at 58 degrees, with a rise to 62, and a steady decline to where it is today at 52 degrees.  The last couple of weeks there has been a steady bite for walleyes.  I was catching walleyes in 18-22 feet of water last week.  This week was a different story.

In what was the best fall bite I have experienced since our time here on Thunder Lake, I boated 42 walleyes in the last 2 nights with the full moon.  The bite was fast-paced in 23-28 feet of water with the biggest fish being a 18.5″ walleye.  Nothing too big, but if you were looking to have a meal, you would have had your pick of consistent 15-17 inch fish.  Perfect size for the frying pan.  Jig and minnow setups have been the go-to choice for me.  I have been using rainbow chubs throughout the fall.

Haven’t fished crappies lately since I have been so intent on chasing the walleyes, but I know there are people still hitting the crappie bite as well.  Not sure how long that bite will last.

Given the forecast for the coming week and the cool down that will occur, I have a feeling the crappie fishing will slow down, but the walleye fishing bite still should probably be good until the water temps dip to the low 40’s and approach turnover.

These last two nights got me thinking about Thunder Lake as a fishery.  Between the continuing stocking program in odd years by the DNR and the natural reproduction that occurs, I think it’s safe to say that Thunder Lake has a bright future for walleye fishing and that the stocking program has been working. The numbers are definitely there and I have seen an increase over the last 3 year on the average size of walleyes being caught.

Heading out tonight again in the coldfront and east winds.  We’ll see if it has a big effect on fishing.  I’ll keep you updated.
